Slobodan Kovač, famous Serbian ex-volleyball player and gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, currently Iran's national team coach, was named an honorary citizen of Urmia.

Slobodan “Boba” Kovač has left an indelible mark playing for two years in Urmia since 2004 to 2006.
With Iran Kovač took fourth place in the World League in 2014 and sixth place in the World Championship 2014 in Poland, as well as the first place and a gold medal at the Asian Games 2014.
