The match between Australia and Egypt will find its place in volleyball history by one of the best individual performances ever! Thomas Edgar, the „Aussie“ superstar, scored 50 points in 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13) win of his team, putting his name on the list of rare players that reached 50 or more points in a single game! Australian team took its first victory at the 2015 FIVB World Cup and it needed four rounds for that success. Ahmed Abdelahay had 30 points in Egypt.

Egypt put pressure on Australia from the very start of the clash, getting 4-2 and 9-6. Although, the „Aussies“ recovered quickly (9-9), Egyptians kept sending precise spikes on their side, especially the best scorer so far in the tournament, Abdelhay. The Africans had a constant initiative, whether being one or two points ahead (17-15, 23-21). Interestingly, defenses on both sides were powerless and the attack was crucial to decide which team will claim this set. Edgar was perfect on Australian side until the finish when he served wide, giving Egypt 23-21. His team couldn’t recover, losing 25-23.

Reversed situation on the court occured in the second set as Australians were those that took initiative (3-2, 7-4). Edgar – Abdelhay duel continued as both were main, very often, the only attacking options in their teams. On 12-11 lead, Australia made three consecutive errors, giving its opponent 14-12! The „Aussies“ regained their lead in the finish as Staples joined Edgar with a tipover and block. Both had one block each on 24-24 and leveled the score in sets 26-24.

Edgar completed his astonishing performance by adding blocks to his game in Set 3, besides powerful spikes, but Australians couldn’t unstick from Egypt on a scorebord only until the first TTO 16-14. A 4-1 run from African side threatened to turnover the course of the match, but Mote’s two blocks returned things to the place for Australia 21-18. The „Aussies“ missed two set balls, but not the third 25-23.

Edgar scored his 35th point at the start of the fourth set in which Egypt set the pace of the game, having 9-7 and 17-13. With two aces in a row, Abdelhay gave his team 17-13 and there was no return for Australia despite Edgar’s show. When Hassan replaced Abdelhay in attack, Egypt went on 21-16 and prepared for the tie-break 25-20.

Australia was on the run in the fifth set 4-1. Egypt had some chances while trailing 11-8, but Edgar’s counter attack and technical error by the Africans were turning points of the tie-break 13-8. Who else, but Edgar had the honor to finish this game – 15-13!
