The play of both teams in first set was developed in series. In the first half, Turkey had more success, while in the other half, Azeri women started better but succumbed when it was most important. Despite trailing 4-2, Turkish ladies gained 8-6 at first TTO. They also had 11-7 by converting the most of their counters. At 14-11, Azerbaijan set three consecutive blocks to level 14-14. While being behind 20-18, Turkish players created incredible 7-1 run, disarming rivals with their weapon – blocking 25-21!
Azerbaijan missed huge opportunity to throw Turkey on their knees in Set 2. They had 13-9, but couldn’t maintain it for a long time. Turkey equalized on 15-15 and by investing huge effort in defense and digging several hard balls, they had 22-19. Somehow, Azerbaijan collected strength and made 5-0 run, getting two set balls! One, probably the best rally in Round 1 of European Championship, was a key point, won by Turkey for 24-24! Turkish ladies converted third set ball 28-26.
It seems that losing previous set left permanent mark on Azeri women who were so unfocused in Set 3, committing too many errors. Turkey accepted this gift, having 8-5, 10-6 and 15-7. Time-out of Azeri head coach at 18-8 didn’t change much as Turkey were marching towards victory 25-13.
Polen Uslupehlivan was Turkey‘s top scorer with 11 points. Polina Rahimova collected 17 in Azerbaijan.
