Finnish VaLePa Sastamala caused huge upset by beating German runners-up, Berlin Recycling Volleys, in the first leg of the CEV Cup Challenge Round (quarter-finals) 3-1 (29-31, 25-20, 28-26, 25-21).

Last season’s bronze medalists in the CEV Champions League started match in the best possible way by winning an exhausting first set, but allowed hosts to return to the match in the second set.

Nevertheless, BR Volleys had a constant scoring initiative in Sets 3 and 4, even entering in the finish with two-point or three-point gap, but succumbed to more motivated rivals who were led by Venezuelan opposite Jesús Danian Chourio, known by huge spiking reach (officially 3.70m). He scored 30 points. On the other side, Australian Paul Carroll had 17.

Chourio’s previous club, CAI Teruel from Spain, had no chance against Belgian champions Knack Roeselare despite investing tremendous effort 1-3 (22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 30-32).

Pieter Coolman topped Roeselare’s scorers with 17 points. American receiver/outside hitter Cory John Riecks had 19 in Teruel.
