In the fight for the first trophy in the new season, the national champions Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle defeated vice-champions Projekt Warszawa (formerly known as ONICO Warszawa) by a 3-1 (25-17, 34-32, 19-25, 25-23) in Gliwice and got crowned as Superpuchar Polski winners for 2019. ZAKSA, who were led by former Serbia Men head coach Nikola Grbić for the first time in the official match, won their premier Super Cup.
The team from the Polish capital failed to convert several set points in the second set after they recovered from a 5-point deficit (16-21). Still, even their appearance on the court today was a success as they obtained a license to play at the last minute and changed the name into Projekt. The team from Warsaw, who was known by the name ONICO, struggled to save its existence the entire summer.
Projekt had a misfortune to play ZAKSA without a nominal opposite hitter in the line-up. Belarussian Artur Udrys is injured, while Belgian Bram van den Dries left to play in South Korea at the beginning of this month. Therefore, the middle blocker Jakub Kowalczyk played as designated opposite hitter, while the recent newcomer Jan Król, who is a nominal opposite hitter, was only in the protocol because of the fact that he just came to the team.
Łukasz Kaczmarek was ZAKSA’s top scorer in the match with 20 points (5 kill blocks) and was named MVP of the match. Belgian Igor Grobelny scored 15 points for Projekt.
