We already informed you of the format change in both Men’s and Women’s Superliga next season. Now, it is time to introduce you to the new rules that will be applied to both Russian top divisions in the 2019/20 season. There are two major rule changes whose implementation will be conducted in the cooperation with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB):
- Russian leagues will take part in testing the new rule regarding the consequences of the red card.
As you know, the current rule says that if a player or a coach gets a red card for rude behavior, a point is automatically awarded to the opponent. From now on, a new rally will be played after the red card. The captain of the team that was red carded will have the choice – to serve or receive. The lineup and rotation of players will remain as they were at the time the card was shown. If the team that was penalized with the red card wins the rally, the score will not change. If the opponent wins the rally, they will get a point. And in that rally, each team has an additional video check. It is obvious that the FIVB wants to reduce the influence of the referees on the course of the match. Still, this might give an impetus to players that rude behavior will go unpunished if their team wins the new rally.
- Next season, coaches in the Russian Superliga will be able to ask for the video check on an additional situation compared to what they could ask until now.
Besides usual requests like “ball in/out“, “touch/no touch“ and others, the “pancake“ (when a volleyball player puts his hand between the floor and the ball while playing defense) will also be revised. Another innovation is that the TV broadcast of the match can now be used as a video source. To do this, one of the monitors of the video viewing system should have the ability to display a picture of the TV broadcast on the screen in the hall so that everyone could see it.
