UNIVERSIADE W: Russia win gold medal fourth time in a row, Japan claim bronze

For the fourth time in a row, the Women’s Volleyball national team of Russia won the title in the Sumer Universiade.

Russia Women’s Volleyball national team superiorly ended their 2019 Summer Universiade campaign in Naples as they beat the hosts Italy in the final by a 3-1 (25-21, 15-15, 26-24, 25-18).

Guided by the head coach Andrey Voronkov (currently at the helm of the country’s Women’s championship runners-up Lokomotiv Kaliningrad), who was a former Russia Men’s national team head coach, the “Zbornaya” made a 6-0 record in the tournament (3-0 in the pool stage and 3-0 in the knockout stage).

The new member of Volero Le Cannet (France) Anna Lazareva put down 24 points for Russia, while Angelina Sperskaite (Dinamo Krasnodar) added 16 (4 aces). Ekaterina Evdokimova (Uralochka-NTMK Sverdlovsk Region) made 5 kill blocks. Anna Nicoletti, the new player of Lardini Filottrano, scored 15 points for “Azzurrine”.

In the bronze medal match, Japan beat Hungary by a 3-2 with 18 points from the captain Arisa Inoue (Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Springs). Mayu Oikawa (Okayama Seagulls) served 5 kill aces. Anett Németh (Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, NCAA) poured in 27 points for Hungary, including 5 kill blocks.
