RUS M: Mikhaylov wants to play as opposite hitter again, Sokolov returns to transfer market?

Zenit-Kazan don’t play the way their fans got used to in previous seasons. That’s why some changes in the roster of the Russian men’s volleyball giants are possible in January next year and even more at the end of the season.

Losing the championship title in Russia after 5 years and a title in the CEV Champions League after 4 years, both last season, were first red flags risen upon Zenit-Kazan. This season, they suffered 3 defeats in 11 games in the home league, have 1-1 in the Champions League and won the bronze medal in the Club World Championship. These certainly aren’t satisfying results in the eyes of Zenit-Kazan’s fans. Winning the national cup might make a better turn.

According to an Italian journalist Gian Luca Pasini, the MVP of the 2019 Russian Cup Maksim Mikhaylov doesn’t seem to want to play on position 4 (to which he was switched to make room in the line-up for Bulgarian opposite hitter Tsvetan Sokolov) anymore. Pasini wrote in his blog that this is the reason why Sokolov might return to the transfer market at the end of the season. No matter how Bulgarian is a famous name, Mikhaylov is a club legend. This turn of events could change the strategies of Italian clubs, whose purchasing power is soaring in recent years.

According to Pasini, Zenit-Kazan might not wait for the end of the season to make some decisions. They could be made already in January.

From the moment I read here that Mikhaylov might move to an outside hitter position in order to free up an opposite spot for Sokolov, I knew that would be a huge mistake. Moving Mikhaylov from the position where he was one of the best in the world was a very fundamental error on the Zenit part. I would say made out of desperation because they lost Leon and Anderson two years in the row and couldn’t find a good replacement for outside hitter position. Ngapeth is a problematic child and he is not the one. Zenit should bring Leon back since it seems he will be on the market next summer.
I have no idea how much money they offered to Sokolov but he made an enormous mistake to leave Lube who is the best team in the world right now. Hopefully, he can go back because his replacements are not on his level.

Re: @former_player
Lucarelli or Leal could play in Kazan.

Re: @Fan Volleyball True, however, I don’t see Leal leaving Lube who is the best team in the world right now. As far as I know, Lucarelli never played outside Brazil. Zenit’s challenge is the location of the club and long trips across Russia for playing games.
