RUS M: Zenit-Kazan down Fakel in match full of errors on both sides

The big match of the opening round of the 2020/21 Russian men’s volleyball Championship between Zenit-Kazan and Fakel was filled with drama.

Kuzbass downed Zenit Saint Petersburg yesterday (3-1) but that wasn’t the only big match scheduled at the start of the 2020/21 Superliga Parimatch regular season for men.

In the encounter that was filled with drama and emotion, but with a lot of mistakes, Zenit-Kazan beat Fakel in the tie-break: 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13). Last season Zenit lost twice to Fakel in the regular season so today’s match was supposed to be a treat for the fans. However, players of both teams showed very nervous play which resulted in too many errors: Zenit had 42, while Fakel committed 34.

Maksim Mikhaylov top-scored for the winning side but also in the match overall with 28 points, including 4 blocks. The Pole Bartosz Bednorz made 74 % reception (32 % perfect). Maksim Zhigalov scored 21 points for Fakel, while Aleksandr Gutsalyuk made 4 blocks.

There was one more tie-breaker today from which ASK emerged victorious: 3-2 against Dinamo-LO. The titleholders Lokomotiv, as well as Ural and Yugra-Samotlor, achieved straight-set wins each.
