Kuzbass put an end to Zenit-Kazan’s campaign in the 2020/21 Russian Men’s Volleyball Championship.

Kuzbass debuted in the inaugural Final Six of the Russian Championship with a win. On Day 2 of the final tournament of the 2020/21 Superliga Parimatch in Moscow, the Kemerovo side beat Zenit-Kazan in the tie-break in Pool B, partially 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18, and 15-13. Italian Ivan Zaytsev led the Kemerovo club with 26 points. Evgeniy Sivozhelez served 5 aces, while Igor Kobzar set up 4 blocks.

Given they suffered the second defeat in as many games, Zenit-Kazan lost all chances of advancing to the semifinals. Thus, the most titled club in the Russian league won’t be among the medal winners in the competition for the first time since the 2005/06 season. Thus, quite a shakey season of Zenit-Kazan (3rd in regular season, 19-7 record) ended ingloriously. Kuzbass and Lokomotiv secured their spots in the semis and will tomorrow decide in the head-to-head encounter on who’ll go there as group winners and who as the no.2.

It’s not yet determined which of the 3 teams from Pool A will progress to the top 4. In the only match today, Dinamo Moscow beat Zenit Saint Petersburg, achieving the 7th win against these rivals counting all competitions this season. It was their first mutual encounter after unpleasant scenes in the CEV Cup final. Dinamo’s Yaroslav Podlesnykh was the most productive player of the match, scoring 24 points. Anton Semyshev and Bulgarian Tsvetan Sokolov served 4 aces each.
