Zenit KAZAN was not the main favorite going into the Final Six Tournament of this year’s Russian Superleague. An additional blow to the hopes of the Tatars came in the pool phase as their superstar Maxim Mikhaylov got injured and was told he would have to sit out the remainder the tournament. Mikhaylov was replaced by 18-year old Victor Poletaev, a gold medalist from last year’s U19 and U21 FIVB World Championship and the rising star of Russian Volleyball.

I think we showed one of the main features that Russian people are known by: the harder it gets, the better we perform,” coach of Zenit KAZANAlekno commented. “I experienced this while working with the club as well as with the national team. I think that the injuries suffered by Volkov and Mikhaylov were the turning point of this tournament. My players mobilized all of their energies, they played very well and on top of this, I think our rivals underestimated us because they thought we were weakened by these injuries.”

Video and stats from this matches coming very soon on Russian National Championship 2013/2014.
