A defeat on Saturday in 5 sets against Colombia had left Venezuela depending not only on their results in the last round. The “Vinotinto” did their share by beating Peru 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-16). Luis Arias top-scored for Venezuela with 17 points (4 kill blocks), while Eduardo Romay tallied 14 for Peru.
This match was followed by a duel of the teams whose hopes for participating at the Tokyo Olympics were alive prior to Venezuela’s victory. Actually, in these circumstances, only Colombia had a chance to go to the Japanese capital but the hosts played for the honor and prevailed by a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19), sending Venezuela to Tokyo. This will be the 2nd appearance of the Men’s Volleyball Team of Venezuela in the Olympics, the first was in the 2008 Beijing Games.
