Dentil/Praia Clube took down Itambé/Minas in the tie-break of the all-Brazilian last-round clash to win their inaugural South American Women’s Volleyball Club Championship title.
If in recent years Minas were dominant in mutual encounters against Praia, the Uberlândia team showed that this season, it is willing to change such a course. The players commanded by Paulo Coco won the 2021 South American Women’s Club Championship in Brasília. In the so-called ‘Pão de Queijo’ classic, Praia beat Minas 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-7), but could have done it four sets as they squandered 10-6. This way, Praia finished the tournament with all four wins and 11 points, ahead of the Belo Horizonte team, who finished with 10 points and a 3-1 record. Dominican Brayelin Martínez scored 22 points and was the most outstanding player on the winning side, while for Minas, Thaísa Daher scored 18. Cláudia Bueno ‘Claudinha’, the setter on the winning side, was named MVP of the event.
The success of Praia interrupted the sequence of three straight titles of Minas in the South American Club Championship. Praia already took three trophies (Brazilian Super Cup, state championship, and South American Club Championship) this season, which is yet to unwrap. Both Praia and Minas will be the continental representatives in the FIVB Club World Championship, which is scheduled to take place between December 15 and 19 in Ankara, Turkey.
