Here below an exhaustive summary of the European qualification process for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship – with a breakdown per gender.
MEN
Europe has got nine spots for the final round of the World Champs, including one for the host country, Poland. Poland is directly qualified for the World Championship.
12 teams – as per their position in the European Ranking – will start their campaign directly from the third round which is scheduled for January 3-5, 2014. The third round will be played via 5 tournaments of 4 teams each, with the winners as well as the second ranked team with the best score eventually qualifying for the World Championship.
The winners of the first qualification round – seven teams – make it directly to the third round.
The second-ranked teams of the first round qualifiers – with the exception of Pool G – move on to the second round slated for October 2-6, 2013. One, two or three teams will advance from the second to the third round depending on the spots still available to complete the grid of 20 set to play the third round. The two best ranked teams from the final round of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship will automatically qualify for the World Championship. One or two of the twelve teams pre-seeded in the third round may hence leave their spot(s) available for teams coming from the second qualification round.
