Switzerland: World Olympic Qualification tournaments outlined

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 12, 2012 – With the first Continental Olympic Qualification tournament starting in Cameroon on Monday, the qualification process for the World Olympic Qualification tournaments for the London 2012 Olympic Games is here clarified as the countdown to London 2012 continues to gather pace.

World Olympic Qualification tournaments outlined

With hosts Great Britain and the top three teams from the FIVB Men’s and Women’s World Cup (Italy, USA and China for the women and Russia, Poland and Brazil for the men) already earning their berths, only eight places remain for each gender.

Women

The Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament is combined with the Asia Women’s Continental Qualification Tournament: 

The participating teams for the joint Women’s and Asia Tournaments to be held in Japan are as follows:
•    1 host team (Japan)
•    3 teams from Asia (not qualified for the Olympic Games)
•    4 non-Asian teams being the highest ranked teams not-qualified for the Olympic Games (as at January 5, 2012 or following the completion of all Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, whichever is later) as per drawing of lots distribution – 2 Europe, 1 NORCECA, 1 South America or 1 Africa. According to the FIVB Board of Administration decision the vacancy from South America/Africa will be granted to the highest ranked team on the world ranking (between South America and Africa)

Therefore the eight participating teams are: 
•    Japan (host country)
•    Korea (2011 Asia Championship best team after China (qualified at World Cup) and hosts Japan)
•    Thailand (2011 Asia Championship second best team after China, Japan and Korea)
•    Chinese Taipei (2011 Asia Championship third best team after China, Japan, Korea and Thailand)
•    CEV1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012)
•    CEV2 (Second best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012)
•    NORCECA1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012)
•    CSV1 or CAVB 1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012)

The continental teams will be determined following the completion of their respective Continental Qualification tournaments

Men

Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournaments: (Japan, Italy and Germany)

The participating teams for the joint Men’s World Olympic Qualification and Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Japan will be as follows:
•    1 host team (Japan)
•    4 teams from Asia (not qualified for the Olympic Games)
•    3 non-Asian teams being the highest ranked teams not-qualified for the Olympic Games (as of January 5, 2012 or following the completion of all Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments, whichever is later) as per drawing of lots distribution.

Italy (Rome) and Germany (Berlin) tournaments:  
Vacancies for the Men World Olympic Qualification Tournament:

•    2 host countries 
•    6 other teams 
•    The nine additional teams will be split as per the following: 3 Europe, 2 Asia, 2 NORCECA, 1 South America, 1 Africa.

For Japan the eight participating teams are:            
•    Japan (host country)
•    Iran (2011 Asia Championship best team after hosts Japan)
•    China (2011 Asia Championship second best team after Japan and Iran)
•    Korea (2011 Asia Championship third best team after Japan, Iran and China)
•    Australia (2011 Asia Championship fourth best team after Japan, Iran, China and Korea)
•    CEV1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012)  1st draw
•    NORCECA or CAVB or CSV 1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) 3rd draw

For Germany the four participating teams are: 
•    Germany (host country)
•    CEV1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) 1st draw
•    NORCECA or CAVB or CSV 1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) 3rd draw
•    AVC1 (2011 Asia Championship fifth best team after Japan, Iran, China, Korea and Australia or 2011 Asia Championship sixth best team after Japan, Iran, China, Korea, Australia and India) 2nd draw

For Italy the four participating teams are: 
•    Italy (host country)
•    CEV1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) 1st draw
•    NORCECA or CAVB or CSV 1 (Best ranked team on world rankings as of January 5, 2012) 3rd draw
•    AVC1 (2011 Asia Championship fifth best team after Japan, Iran, China, Korea and Australia or 2011 Asia Championship sixth best team after Japan, Iran, China, Korea, Australia and India 2nd draw
