The 40-year-old outside hitter Piccinini said goodbye to playing Volleyball in a talk-show called Verissimo. After nearly 25 years of her professional career, one of the most prominent Italian female players ever decided she was done with competing.

“I am here to announce that I will no longer play volleyball. I retire. I lived a dream for many years, but I think it’s time to say stop to this wonderful life and start a new one. I want to experience other emotions,“ the seven-time CEV Champions League winner said.

“It was hard to make this decision, but I am 40 years old and I leave as a winner because, two months ago, I won my seventh Champions League. I will miss the feeling before the games and the adrenaline after the victories but I will look for them in something else. I’m still a little overwhelmed but I think it’s the right decision. I thank this beautiful sport that has formed me and helped me so much to become the woman I am today,“ Piccinini stated.

She stressed that she does not plan to coach at a high level but would like to form a family and become a mother.

Piccini won the CEV Champions League with three different clubs (Zanetti Bergamo in 2000, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010; Èpiù Pomì Casalmaggiore in 2016; and Igor Gorgonzola Novara in 2019). With Italy National Team, she became the world champion in 2002, FIVB World Cup winner in 2007 and FIVB World Grand Champions Cup gold medalist in 2009. Individually, Piccinini was named MVP of the CEV Champions League Final Four twice – in 2010 and 2016, as well as Best Spiker in the same competition in 2007.
