Serbia are within reach of the third gold medal in the last three years at major world level tournaments.
The players coached by Zoran Terzić defeated Italy by a 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20) in the semifinals of the 2019 EuroVolley and will have the chance to defend the title which they won in Azerbaijan and Georgia, two years ago. Recall that in the meantime, Serbia became the world champions as well by beating the same rivals for the gold medal. But, in terms of intensity, the Ankara duel was nothing like the one in Yokohama in 2018, when the tie-break had to decide the winners.
Italy were four points ahead for most of the opening set, the last time at 14-10, and let rivals slip them away. A completely opposite situation happened in the third set. In the fourth set, Italian players threatened with a comeback (from 14-20 to 18-20) but then, underperformed in the service.
Tijana Bošković was Serbia’s most prolific player with 22 points (45% attack success rate) but middle blocker Mina Popović was the x-factor for the nation from the Balkans (12 points, 90% excellent attack – 9/10). Paola Egonu top-scored for Italy with 26 points (5 aces) but through only 38% attack (18/48) and by committing as much as 16 unforced errors.
2019 CEV Womens’ Volleyball European Championship – semifinals:
Serbia – Italy 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20)
Turkey vs. Poland, 18:30 C.E.T.
