Germany’s Allianz MTV Stuttgart squandered 2-0 in sets against Turkey’s Eczacıbaşı VitrA İstanbul in the first round of Pool D of the 2021 Women’s Champions League. The hosts of the tournament, led in scoring by Serbian Tijana Bošković (25 points) and in blocking by Beyza Arıcı (7 blocks), turned the match around and won 2 points.
The other match in this pool today also ended in five sets. In the all-Russian derby, Dinamo Moscow also had to bounce back but didn’t have to go such a long way like Eczacıbaşı. A team from the Russian capital trailed 2-1 in sets to Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region. Nataliya Goncharova and Brazilian Natália Zilio Pereira put down 25 points apiece for Dinamo, while Ekaterina Enina set up 6 of the team’s 20 blocks.
Fenerbahçe Opet İstanbul took care of the perfect record of Turkish teams today as they swept France’s VB Nantes in Pool B in Treviso, Italy. Naz Aydemir Akyol, the setter of the ‘Yellow Angels’, set the record for any Turkish volleyball player for the number of seasons played in the Champions League. This was the 15th edition in which she appeared.
The hosts of the tournament, A. Carraro Imoco Conegliano also achieved a straight-set win (3-0 vs Slovenia’s Calcit Volley Kamnik).
