The USA finished pool stage undefeated, making a 2-0 record and 6 points (14-3 overall), after beating Brazil (1-1 and 2 points; 12-5 overall) on Day 3 in the Final Six of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Knowing that the teams which they lead already booked tickets to the semifinals, head coaches of both sides decided to give a rest to the starters and sent substitutes on the court.

The prospect Jordan Thompson steered the United States to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21) win over Brazil in Pool B in the Final Six of the 2019 VNL, in Nanjing, China, with both teams assuring a spot in the semifinals prior to the encounter. The North Americans took a little revenge on the “Seleção” for a defeat in the Preliminary Round (3-1). With the victory, the USA claimed the top spot in the pool and made sure they will play the semis against the second-placed side from Pool A (China or Italy). Turkey secured No.1 in this pool.

A 22-year-old opposite hitter Thompson became the first U.S. player to score 30 points or more in a single VNL match. The University of Cincinnati Bearcats member (senior year) tallied 33 and is the second player to make 30+ during the Final Six after Poland’s Malwina Smarzek scored 33 yesterday. Tori Dixon made her contribution to the win with 5 kill blocks. Lorenne Teixeira stood out for Brazil with 21 points.
