The U.S. national team made nearly 3,000 spectators at the Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago happy by beating France in its first match in the Final Six of the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League. Interestingly, the 2019 VNL Finals is the first volleyball major world level tournament hosted by the United States since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

For the first time this season, the U.S. national team (9-6 in the preliminary round, No.6) had all seven 2016 Rio Olympics starters in one match, including an outside hitter Aaron Russell who made his debut for the USA in 2019. On the other hand, France (11-4 in the preliminary round, No.4) came to the Final Six without 4 major players: Ngapeth, Grebennikov, Le Goff, and Boyer.

Due to all of these factors, the result of the Pool A encounter between these two sides logically went in favor of the United States: 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21).

The USA’s middle blocker Maxwell Holt was the most prolific player for his team with 17 points of which he put down 8 from the block! Jean Patry scored 17 points for France who will seek a spot in the semifinals against Russia on the last day of the pool stage.

2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League, Final Six:

Day 1:

Brazil – Poland 2-3 (23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 9-15)

Day 2:

USA – France 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21)

I don't like the comment that Balkestein-Grothues underperformed! We all know she is there to receive and defend. As you said: 0 aces for Brazil, so she did a great job! Aswell did Schoot, who was almost perfect in receive and defence! Reply

Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn't pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.

In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games... :-(
