ITALIAN CUP M: Perugia retain the trophy after being down 2-0, Lube’s another fail in the final…

1656 2

Just like in the previous edition of the Italian national Cup, Perugia defeated Lube to lift the trophy.

Unlike the last year’s edition, when Perugia won the game in four sets, this time Perugia were in a very difficult situation after two sets.

Lube played at a high level and earned a 2-0 lead, but as of the third set Perugia started playing much better giving a huge resistance, which led them to an amazing comeback.

This is the first trophy for Wilfredo Leon with Perugia, who scored 26 points. The Serbian opposite Aleksandar Atanasijevic contributed with 18 points, while Filippo Lanza added 12 and Fabio Ricci 11.

In Lube, Tsvetan Sokolov scored 25 points, Osmany Juantorena 17 and Yoandy Leal 13.

This is a huge confidence boost for Perugia before the continuation of the Italian Serie A1.

Men’s Italian Cup, the final:

Perugia - Lube 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-13)

The semifinals:

Perugia – Modena 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-18)

Trentino – Lube 2-3 (20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-15, 10-15)

5 observations from the Del Monte Coppa
#1 Congrats Perugia, Leon is worth every Euro he is getting an more.
#2 Lube flat out ran out of steam after playing a grueling and emotional 5 setter less than 24 hours before against Trentino
#3 Modena is in trouble and doesnt look healthy for the CEV cup and holding on to 4th place.
#4 A healthy Trentino is the best 'team' in the SuperLega. They are the favorite to win this year imo.
#5 Italian A1 Volleyball is so much fun this year.

Leon is currently the best outside hitter in the world.
Modena is in trouble with Christenson's injury, they desperately need 1st class outside hitter, that is their weakest spot.
Lube has 'too many stars' syndrome coupled with the psychological issue of losing 7 finals in the row.
Trentino and Perugia are the best and their games are decided by what kind of day they have on the court but either team can win.

I don't like the comment that Balkestein-Grothues underperformed! We all know she is there to receive and defend. As you said: 0 aces for Brazil, so she did a great job! Aswell did Schoot, who was almost perfect in receive and defence! Reply

WC 2019 W: Brazil beat weakened team of Serbia in thriller, China win Asian derby

Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn't pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.

In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games... :-(
