The top players of both male and female Argentina national team issued a hard statement against the country’s Volleyball Federation (FeVA), only a few days before the start of International Qualifiers for the 2020 Toky Olympics.

Facundo Conte, Luciano De Cecco, Alexis González, Santiago Darraidou, Yamila Nizetich and Julieta Lazcano appeared in a press conference as representatives of the Argentine Volleyball Players Association (JuAVA) and issued a very hard statement against the country’s federation (FeVA), Voley Plus reported. They claim the Federation owes them money, demand better conditions, reduction of a transfer fee and new leadership. Furthermore, JuAVA cannot guarantee the participation of both male and female national teams in the upcoming tournaments in case their requirements are not fulfilled. And next major tournament is the International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!

These demands are the culmination of the misunderstandings that players had been having with the national federation since 2018. In January that year, players rebelled against the lack of respect from the FeVA and unfulfilled promises regarding money prize. In the summer of 2018, male national team captain De Cecco said that FeVA needs to change its leadership. Recently, Nizetich told that players must be involved more in the work of the federation.

The JuAVA representatives stressed the following in the press conference:

  • FeVA must revise its decision to establish a 30% fee for transfers of the players abroad to a reasonable figure.
  • FeVA needs to pay arrears to the players of the Women’s national team in the amount of the $ 65,000 as the award coming from competing in the 2018 FIVB Nations League.
  • FeVA needs to secure that all players should be paid for competing for the national team and that health insurance should also be paid, which means that players should no longer give their own money to cover all of that; that a doctor, a kinesiologist and a physical trainer should always be present when national teams travel to tournaments.
  • FeVA needs to correct a gender inequality that is verified in the awards agreement as well as in the organization, promotion and duration of the Women’s League in relation to the Men’s.
  • FeVA needs to secure enough funds for competitions so that players competing for national teams should no longer pay own money to participate in them.
  • FeVA needs to change its leadership and elect another one whose work will be diligent.

Wow! That is so bad! I didn’t know the Argentina players were treated so badly by their own country. That is outrageous! I applaud the courage of these players to stand up for themselves and hope they get what they asked for.
