The head coach of the Serbia women’s volleyball National Team, Zoran Terzić, confirmed that Melissa Vargas is close to becoming its member.

Terzić didn’t just confirm our findings that Vargas is in the procedure that should result in the right of a Cuban player to play for the Serbia Women but said he was the one to suggest such an idea, media in the country reported.

“We’re all waiting for an answer from the FIVB. Melissa is here, with me, at Fenerbahçe. Nothing has changed since she got a Serbian passport. It’s important that the people from the federation sent a request to the FIVB, so we hope for a positive response,” Terzić stated.

Ever since Vargas obtained Serbian citizenship, which was last year, the national federation (OSSRB) of this Balkan country has been collecting the documentation needed for this opposite hitter to get permission from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to change the sports nationality.

Although there hasn’t been a meeting of the FIVB Board on the subject of requests for changes in sports citizenship this year, the OSSRB expects that by the end of 2020, despite the problems with the coronavirus, a positive response will arrive from the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. In such a case, Vargas would be able to play for the Serbia National Team in 2022, which includes a required break of two years.
