ACH M: Australia make epic comeback vs. Pakistan, will play defending champs Japan in semis

Australia made an epic comeback against underdogs Pakistan in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in Tehran (Iran).

For the first time since 2011, Australia are in the semifinals at the Asian Championship. The “Volleyroos“ had to come back from two sets down against Pakistan, who lost both matches in the Top 8 and finished last-placed in Pool F: 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 15-13).

Australia had as much as five players in double digits, led by Thomas Edgar (22 points), who was a key player on the winning side in the tie-break as he nailed down 5 points. Trent O’Dea and Beau Graham added 4 kill blocks apiece. Aimal Khan poured in 24 points for Pakistan, 5 in the tie-break. Australia remained an undefeated side (6-0) and will face two-time defending champions Japan in the semis.

Japan struggled to maintain their invincibility in the tournament. They needed four sets to break the resistance of China: 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22).

The team coached by Yuichi Nakagaichi was led by Yuki Ishikawa (22 points). Jiang Chuan scored 21 points, including 4 kill blocks for China. That is how many kill blocks Rao Shuhan made as well. The team led from the bench by famous Raúl Lozano will fight for the positions between the fifth and the eighth in the continuation of the tournament.

Iran swept Chinese Taipei, while South Korea beat India in four sets to complete the semifinal line-up.

Australia – Pakistan 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 15-13)

South Korea – India 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21)

Japan – China 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22)

Iran – Chinese Taipei 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-21)

Semifinals:

South Korea – Iran, 13:00 C.E.T.

Australia – Japan, 16:00 C.E.T.
