After they lost Gabriella Guimarães ‘Gabi Guimarães’ until the end of the season due to injury, Sesc quickly reacted in the transfer market to find a replacement for her. A 24-year-old outside hitter of the National Team of Dominican Republic, Yonkaira Peña, reinforced the side coached by Bernardo Rezende until the end of the season.

After parting ways with the Polish club Chemik Police at the end of the 2016/17 season, Peña briefly joined Indias de Mayagüez from Puerto Rico at the beginning of 2017 before returning to play in her home country for Mirador Santo Domingo.
