CEV CUP M: Barkom shockingly eliminate PAOK, Modena dominate in rematch vs. Olympiacos

Barkom-Kazhany Lviv made a true stunt in the rematch of the 16th finals of the 2020 CEV Men’s Volleyball Cup against PAOK Thessaloniki.

Ukrainian champions Barkom beat the odds and eliminated Greek vice-champions PAOK from the CEV Cup. After losing the first leg at home by a 3-1, Barkom’s chances of advancing to the eighth-finals were rather slim knowing they had to bounce back at one of the most difficult away grounds in Europe. However, led by Yuriy Tyumin (25 points), the team coached by Latvian expert Uģis Krastiņš swept PAOK in the rematch by a 3-0 and then finished them off in the Golden Set! Dutch Kay van Dijk tallied 17 points for PAOK.

One more team found its way to the 1/8 finals through the Golden Set. Turkish side Galatasaray HDI İstanbul squandered a 3-1 victory over the Czech Dukla Liberec from the first leg and lost by a 3-0 in the rematch. Nevertheless, Galatasaray claimed the addition set by a 15-11 and went to the next round.

Leo Shoes Modena from Italy prevailed in a face-off against Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus. It was definitely a derby of this stage of the competition. After being on a verge of defeat in the first match, Modena downed rivals in straight sets in the rematch.
