There are no undefeated teams in Pool D of the 2021 EuroVolley qualifier in Nicosia, Cyprus. Spain surprisingly succumbed to Moldova in the last round of the first stage of the qualifications: 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19). Mihai Voleanschi (not so known to the wider volleyball public, a member of France’s third division side Harnes Volley-Ball last season) was Moldova’s most effective player with 31 points. This was Spain’s first defeat in three rounds and now both today’s rivals have the same record (2-1) and the same number of points (6).
Furthermore, after sweeping Cyprus, Latvia are tied with the mentioned duo in both parameters, which means that in the next three rounds (the second stage starts on September 4) which will also be played in the Cypriot capital, these three sides will have equal chances of securing the spot at the continental tournament next year.
