After beating Poland’s Jastrzębski Węgiel by a forfeit, and then sweeping Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys, it was expected that Russia’s Zenit Kazan will tonight have the easiest job of all in Pool C, in Berlin. However, Slovenia’s ACH Volley Ljubljana turned out to be a tough nut to crack. Vladimir Alekno’s wards achieved a four-set victory, partially 25-16, 19-25, 25-23, and 28-26, mostly thanks to the Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth (16 points).
In what was predicted to be the most even encounter in Round 3, Poland’s PGE Skra Bełchatów downed Turkey’s Fenerbahçe HDI İstanbul in four sets in Pool A. Bartosz Filipiak and Iranian Milad Ebdipour tallied 20 points apiece on the winning side with the latter making 76 % attack (19/25).
Skra’s fellow countrymen – also Pool A hosts – Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle ended the first tournament with a perfect record after surpassing Belgium’s Lindemans Aalst in straight sets.
Italy’s Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia didn’t have problems against Pool B hosts, France’s Tours VB (3-0).
