Savino Del Bene Scandicci notched a clear win over SSC Palmberg Schwerin in the rematch of the 2023 CEV Women’s Volleyball Cup playoffs.
With a narrow 3-2 defeat on the road in the first leg of the CEV Volleyball Cup 2023 | Women playoff round behind them, Germany’s Schwerin went into the rematch against Italy’s Scandicci full of optimism. However, the Serie A title contenders proved to be one size too big, and after a 3-0 victory in the rematch, they made it into the quarterfinals of the second-tier European club tournament. Schwerin was four points up during the first halves of the first and third sets but failed to create uncertainty in a duel. Scandicci were led on the court by Russian-Italian youngster Ekaterina Antropova (24 points). American Lindsey Ruddins tallied 19 on the losing side.
Olympiacos Piraeus of Greece defeated Dukla Liberec of the Czech Republic 3-1 in the rematch of the playoffs. After managing to overturn their rival’s six-point lead in the first set, the team commanded by Italian Lorenzo Micelli never stooped and took not only that set but also the next, which was enough to secure a quarterfinal berth. In the top 8, Olympiacos will face one of the third-ranked teams from the CEV Champions League that fails to progress to the playoffs.
Grot Budowlani Łódź of Poland also advanced to the Challenge Cup playoff stage yesterday, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to learn the name of the fourth and final team to advance to the quarterfinals via playoffs. The rematch between Turkey’s THY Istanbul and Italy’s e-work Busto Arsizio (3-0 in the first leg) was postponed due to an earthquake that affected Turkey a few days ago.
