EL W: Ukraine take home a promising lead from first leg of finals as they beat Finland 3-1

Ukrainian National Team is only one step away from winning the CEV Women’s Volleyball European League as they beat Finland on the road in the finals, first leg, of the 9th edition of the tournament.

In a duel of the two national teams that have never been playing European League (competition for senior Women’s Volleyball national teams of Europe that serves as a qualifying tournament for the FIVB World Grand Prix) final before, Ukraine outclass Finland 3-1 (25-20, 29-27, 22-25, 25-11) in Helsinki.

An experienced Nilüfer Belediyesi middle blocker Iryna Trushkina led Ukraine with 24 points (6 kill blocks) while a receiver competing with Indonesian Jakarta Pertamina Energi, Anna Stepanyuk, added 20. Piia Korhonen, opposite of German Dresdner SC, topped Finland with 19 points (3 kill blocks), followed by receiver from HPK Hämeenlinna, Salla Karhu, who had 12 (3 kill blocks).

Second leg is scheduled for July 9 in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.
