Despite being undefeated in the Regular Season and claiming spot number one for the playoffs, Austrian Men’s volleyball title holders Hypo Tirol Innsbruck will go to knockout stage as second seed. The reason is a doping scandal of one of their players, which was the first case of a drug usage in the history of Austrian volleyball!

Austrian Anti-Doping Agency officially confirmed that Stanislav Masliev, the Russian receiver from Tirol, was using doping before the 2017 CEV Champions League qualifier against Israeli Hapoel Mate Asher Akko, on November 11. Thus, Austrian Volleyball Federation took away five points from Tirol. Due to this sanction, Austrian champions ended Regular Season as second-placed, not as top seed according to the preliminary standings, having one point less than new leaders SK Posojilnica Aich/Dob.

As for Masliev, the forbidden substance stanozolol** was found in his urine sample taken after the above mentioned match in November. The athlete admitted he was using the drug on his own. Thus, Tirol terminated the contract with a 23-year-old Russian receiver, who came to the club from Russian Division 2 side MGTU Moscow, in August last year.

** Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid. It has been used in both animal and human patients for a number of conditions. In humans, it has been demonstrated to be successful in treating anemia and hereditary angioedema. Stanozolol is one of the anabolic steroids commonly used as performance-enhancing drugs and is banned from use in sports.
