VNL 2019 W: Dominican Republic break 13-year spell against USA, Serbia with no solution for Egonu as Italy reach 5-1

The Dominican Republic national team became expert in beating big names in the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League!

POOL 5:

After downing Russia and Brazil in the first week of the tournament, the Dominican Republic defeated the United States by a 3-2 (25-10, 16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11) on Day 3 of the second week, in Conegliano, Italy. This was only the third win of the Caribbean side against the North American rivals in 19 world-level mutual encounters. The last one came 13 years ago in the FIVB World Grand Prix. In the meantime, the United States had a 13-game winning streak against the Dominican Republic.

Brayelin Martínez top-scored for the Dominicans with 26 points, while Lisvel Eve set up as much as 7 kill blocks. Bethania de la Cruz contributed to the win of her team by serving 4 aces. Chiaka Ogbogu scored 16 points for the USA.

This was the first victory of the Dominican Republic in Week 2. They are at 3-3, while the USA (5-1) suffered their first defeat in the 2019 Nations League.

Italy are back on the winning track in the 2019 Nations League. After losing to the United States, yesterday, which marked the end of their four-game unbeaten start of the tournament, Italy recovered from a set down against Serbia in a replay of the last year’s final in the FIVB World Championship.

Paola Egonu, who got a break from playing the first week, shined tonight with 32 points (7 aces), while Cristina Chirichella made 5 kill blocks. A 19-year-old Katarina Lazović top-scored for Serbia (3-3), who competed in the second week with a highly rejuvenated squad, with 16 points.

Poland – Netherlands 3-1 (25-13, 25-27, 25-20, 25-15)
