France concluded a flawless first week of the 2019 Nations League in Novi Sad, Serbia, by beating Japan in four sets. Actually, the “Les Bleus” beat all three rivals – the European champions Russia, Serbia, and Japan, respectively – by losing only one set. Next destination for France in the tournament is in China, where they will face Poland, the host nation and Bulgaria in the second week.
A huge display of a teenager (19) opposite hitter Yuji Nishida was not enough for the Asian side (1-2 record) to extend the match to the tie-break. He scored 24 points through nearly 59% attack success rate. The “Les Bleus” had the answer in 14 kill blocks as a team (four players had 4 kill blocks apiece) while, individually, Jean Patry highlighted the winning side with 19 points.
Russia were on the verge of losing to Serbia but made a big comeback in the tie-break of the last match in Pool 4 in the first week of the 2019 Nations League. Russia broke a three-game losing streak against Serbia in major world-level tournaments by beating the rivals in front of their fans in Novi Sad 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10). The “Zbornaya” made a big comeback in the tie-break from 2-6 to 8-7, paving the way to the second victory (2-1), while Serbia are among four teams in the tournament with no win on their account.
Egor Kliuka dominated the service (6 aces) and was very good in the block (4 kill blocks), collecting 25 points for Russia. Lazar Ćirović scored 16 for Serbia.
