Russia swept Italy on Week 2 closing in Pool 6 (at home in Ufa) by a 3-0 (29-27, 25-16, 25-18) to score the fourth successive victory against the “Azzurri” on a major world level tournament. Italy are now at 4-2. As for the game itself, Italy trifled away a 16-11 lead, succumbing to Viktor Poletaev’s serving who made 3 aces in a row at 13-16. Russia’s opposite hitter finished the game with 5 aces and 17 points (16 in the first two sets). Oreste Cavuto scored six for Italy, whose players in the starting lineup in the third set had an average age of only 21.7.
In the same pool, the U.S. national team took its second win (2-4) of the 2019 VNL by beating tournament’s debutants Portugal, who are at 1-5, in four sets. Benjamin Patch led all scorers with 20 points, while Marco Ferreira notched 16 for the losing side.
