VNL 2019 M: Nelli routes Italy to hard-fought win over Japan, Bulgaria down Australia in 5

Italy achieved a hard-fought victory over Japan on Day 1 in Pool 10 of the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League.

Japan provided a worthy resistance to the favorites Italy (5-2 record), winning the first set and forcing “Azzurri“ to earn the third set only after converting the fifth match point: 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 29-27, 25-21).

One element of Italy’s play worked perfectly in the match, the block. The team coached by Gianlorenzo Blengini made 16 kill blocks compared to 4 from Japan.

By scoring 24 points today, Gabriele Nelli became the 2019 VNL best scorer (130 points), squeezing Canada’s Sharone Vernon-Evans out from the top (110). Simone Anzani added 5 kill blocks for Italy. Yuki Ishikawa tallied 14 points for Japan who are at 2-5.

Driven by Todor Skrimov (22 points) and Aleks Grozdanov (5 kill blocks), Bulgaria recorded their third win in the 2019 VNL (4 defeats). Pool 10 hosts downed Australia (1-6) in an exhausting five-setter in Varna.

Luke Smith (19 points), Arshdeep Dosanjh (5 aces), and Beau Graham (4 kill blocks) highlighted for the “Volleyroos“.
