Japan provided a worthy resistance to the favorites Italy (5-2 record), winning the first set and forcing “Azzurri“ to earn the third set only after converting the fifth match point: 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 29-27, 25-21).
One element of Italy’s play worked perfectly in the match, the block. The team coached by Gianlorenzo Blengini made 16 kill blocks compared to 4 from Japan.

Driven by Todor Skrimov (22 points) and Aleks Grozdanov (5 kill blocks), Bulgaria recorded their third win in the 2019 VNL (4 defeats). Pool 10 hosts downed Australia (1-6) in an exhausting five-setter in Varna.
