The United States beat Japan for the 20th time in a row at world level major tournament as Japan’s last victory over the USA came back in 1993 in the FIVB Grand Champions Cup.

By prevailing over the Asian side at Week 4 opening in Pool 13 (Hoffman Estates) by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19), the USA have equaled their longest VNL winning streak of five matches.

The Olympian Thomas Jaeschke made his 2019 VNL debut, while the team’s major star Matthew Anderson was on the roster for the first time in this year’s tournament. Taylor Sander and David Smith top-scored for the USA (6-4; 19 points) with 13 points apiece. The latter made as much as 6 kill blocks, which is the element in which the United States held a 12-3 margin over the rivals. Issei Otake scored 13 for Japan (4-6; 10 points).
