In Pool 15 opener of Week 4, Iran (9-1; 27 points) downed Portugal (2-8; 7 points) in their first-ever mutual encounter at major world level tournaments: 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-18).
Iran hosted the 2019 VNL week for the second straight time – on Week 3 it was in the city of Urmia while this time, Ardabil was the host. The packed stands at the Rezazadeh Hall (6,000 spectators) saw Iran out-blocking rivals (18-5) and equaling their longest winning streak in the VNL of 6 wins.
Amir Ghafour led Iran’s scorers with 16 points, while Ali Shafiei set up 5 kill blocks. The Brazilian-born Caíque Silva tallied 14 points for Portugal.
In the same pool, France (7-3; 22 points) inflicted the fourth consecutive defeat to Australia (1-9; 7 points) in the 2019 VNL.
The match ended in straight sets in favor of the “Les Bleus“ but with Australia missing an opportunity to take a 1-0 sets lead, as they had a 23-21.
Trévor Clévenot was on a high level for France with 18 points. Lincoln Williams scored 17 for the “Volleyroos“, while James Weir made 4 kill blocks.
