The titleholders, the USA, came closer to defending their VNL crown by defeating Poland 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 26-24) in Pool B at the Final Six opener in Nanjing, China. Poland’s drought against the USA at major world level tournaments extended to nine years. The last time they beat the United States was in the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix.
By downing Poland, the USA (12-3 in the Preliminary Round, No.2) might secure their spot in the semifinal already on Day 2 tomorrow, despite having a day off, in case Brazil prevail over Poland.
The USA’s top-scorer in the 2019 VNL Andrea Drews was again on a high level, tallying 23 points. Haleigh Washington was brutal in the block (7 kill blocks), followed by Chiaka Ogbogu (4). Michelle Bartsch-Hackley served 4 aces. As for Poland, the 2019 VNL top-scorer overall Malwina Smarzek notched 22 points, while Agnieszka Kąkolewska made 5 kill blocks.
