In the last match of the pool stage (Day 3) in the Final Six in Nanjing, the hosts China (1-1 and 3 points; 13-4 overall), who came to the tournament with the “B“ squad, downed Italy (0-2 and no points; 11-6 overall) by a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22).
It was a direct clash for the last remained semifinal spot from Pool A, and last semifinal spot overall, as both sides noted one loss each prior to the game. By beating them both, Turkey secured their spot in the final-four lineup, yesterday.
An amazing display of Paola Egounu of 38 points (4 kill blocks) was in vain for Italy! This was the fourth best VNL single-game scoring output ever and Egonu’s name is written down twice in the top four. Poland’s Malwina Smarzek holds No.1 and No.3 in the list with 42 and 39 points, while Egonu is the second and fourth placed with 40 and 38. Liu Xiaotong and Liu Yanhan top-scored for China today with 18 points apiece.
With the host national team moving to the semis, the 2019 VNL final-four will have the same lineup as in the last year’s edition of the tournament: the United States, Brazil, Turkey, and China. And not only that – it will have the same semifinal pairings!
