Brazil and the USA will decide on who will be the second-ever winners of the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League.

In the first semifinal of the 2019 VNL, in Nanjing, China, impeccable Brazil demolished last year’s runners-up Turkey in straight sets, letting their rivals win 25 points in total in the second and the third set: 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-10). This was Brazil’s first-ever win over Turkey in the VNL after losing both of their encounters so far (3-0 in last year’s semifinal and 3-2 in this year’s preliminary round). The South American side reached the final for the first time.

The duel began in a balanced way but from 12-10 in the second set, Brazil took full control of the match, with Turkey giving away twice as many unforced errors as the “Seleção” (26-13).

Natália Pereira top-scored for Brazil with 15 points, while Lorenne Teixeira made 4 kill blocks. Ebrar Karakurt put down 10 points for Turkey.

The defending champions, the USA, beat the hosts China by a 3-1 (25-11, 15-25, 25-17, 25-20) in the second semifinal to advance to the VNL final for the second successive year. The United States national team have prevailed over reigning Olympic Games winners China in all of their four VNL encounters, including last year’s 3-1 victory in the semis, becoming the first team to defeat the Asian giants four times in the VNL.

China will now have a chance to, at least, repeat the last year’s result which is winning the bronze medal.

Andrea Drews and Michelle Bartsch-Hackley were leveled as the USA’s top scorers in the match at 21 points, with the latter serving 4 aces. Liu Yanhan tallied 17 points for China, while Wang Yuanyuan made 4 kill blocks.

The finalists Brazil and the USA already faced each other in the Final Six with the North American side taking a 3-1 win in the pool stage.
