The hosts Slovenia (2-0 and 6 points) downed Turkey (1-1 and 3 points) in a duel for the top spot in Pool A in the 2019 Challenger Cup, whose winners will compete in the next year’s FIVB Nations League, by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-17) with both sides securing a spot in the semifinals prior to the match.
This fact provided an opportunity for both head coaches to rest their starters, which mostly reflected on Turkey’s play as their players made 32 unforced errors, 9 more than their rivals.
Tonček Štern was Slovenia’s most prolific player with 19 points. Yiğit Gülmezoğlu scored 16 for Turkey.
In Pool B, Cuba recorded a hard-fought win over Egypt 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 15-7) after 2 hours and 18 minutes of play and advanced to the semifinals as an undefeated side (2-0 and 5 points).
This outcome was exactly what Belarus (1-1 and 2 points) was hoping for, so they also qualified for the semifinals, but as a second-placed team in the pool.
Marlon Yang notched 22 points for Cuba, while Miguel Ángel López served 5 aces. Mostafa Mohamed scored 11 for Egypt.
