Brazil had the most outstanding preliminary round campaign, suffering only one loss: 14-1 and 39 points. Other teams lined up behind the „Seleção“ in this exact order: Iran, Russia (defending champions), France, Poland, and the United States. There was a little incident just before the start of the Final Six as Iran national team was detained at the Chicago airport for questioning for a few hours before.
Brazil will definitely be deprived of the help from the middle blocker Maurício Souza, who has not yet recovered from an ankle injury which he sustained in October last year.
France head coach Laurent Tillie decided to take only 13 players, although a minimum of 14 is allowed for the Finals. Among the 13-man roster of the “Les Bleus“, there are only one opposite hitter and one libero. It was known from earlier that, despite taking part in the preliminary round, the several stars like Jenia Grebennikov and Earvin Ngapeth will not play the Final Six in order to better prepare for the Qualifications for the 2020 Olympic Games.
On the other hand, Iran and Poland will have as much as 3 players on the opposite hitter’s position registered for the tournament in Chicago.
Speaking of Poland, they will not play the Final Six with the strongest squad, which was also the case in the preliminary round. The only major change compared to the roster that competed in the preliminary round is the entrance of Andrzej Wrona in the team instead of an injured Michał Szalacha.
Aaron Russell found himself in the USA’s roster for the first time this season. The head coach John Speraw decided to register 3 setters for the tournament and assigned the opposite hitter’s position to Matt Anderson, whose proper position is an outside hitter, but this was something that has been happening for a while.
