Given that, just like the USA’s, his players also secured a spot in the semifinals prior to the mutual encounter (both sides beat France), Russia’s head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo introduced his bench players. On the other side, John Speraw put seven Olympians as starters which turned to be crucial in the win of the North Americans of 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20).

USA beat “Zbornaya” in the VNL only in the fourth attempt. Actually, prior to the match in Chicago, Russia are the only rivals in the tournament against which the USA have not won a single set.

Thomas Jaeschke top-scored for the USA with 13 points. Fedor Voronkov was the only player in double digits in Russia, who did not serve a single ace in the match (the USA made 5), with 10 points.
