Serbia-vs-Brazil
Brazil emerged victoriously from a thriller against two-time consecutive European champions Serbia at the opening of the World Cup, a competition that they have never won in their history.
It is worth mentioning that Serbia came to the World Cup with a mixed roster, giving most of the starters that clinched the gold medal at the CEV EuroVolley, a week ago, a time off. There were no Bošković, Ognjenović, Veljković and several other players as well as the head coach Terzić, who was replaced on the bench by his assistant Aleksandar Vladisavljev.
Brazil were one set ahead two times in the match that was held in Hamamatsu, but Serbia came back both times before they succumbed in the tie-break: 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12) in 2 hours and 10 minutes of a play.
Lorenne Teixeira led Brazil’s scorers with 23 points, while Fabiana Claudino added 6 kill blocks in her first official match for “Seleção“ after three years. Ana Bjelica scored 24 points for Serbia.
China-vs-Korea
The reigning champions China swept South Korea in Asian derby by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-14) with Zhu Ting dominating the match with 22 points (62% attack success rate). She was especially inspired in the opening set in which she poured in 9 points. Yuan Xinyue set up 4 kill blocks. Lee Jae-Yeong scored 14 points for Korea.
The USA showed power against Kenya (3-0), which especially applies for the first set, which the North American nation opened with a 9-0. The Italian expert Sergio Busato debuted as Russia head coach with a confident 3-0 win over Cameroon, while the Netherlands swept Argentina. Japan’s star player Sarina Koga tallied 28 points in a four-set win of her team against the Dominican Republic. Incredibly, but she made 74 attacks in the match! She converted 26 of these 74, making 35.1% attack success rate. Erika Shinomiya set up 4 kill blocks. On the other side, Jineiry Martíinez scored 12 points. Her team did not serve a single ace, which rarely happens at top-level tournaments.

The results of the VNLs don’t give the participating national teams any points for the FIVB rankings. Does anybody or WorldofVolley has any idea, why?
Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn’t pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.
In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games… 🙁
