After 2 hours and 5 minutes of hard work on Day 6, China defeated huge rivals Brazil in five sets, in Sapporo, and remained one of the two unbeaten sides in the tournament (6-0). But, China were behind 1-2 in sets, which were the first two sets that the Olympic champions have conceded, so far. However, thanks to an impressive team’s blocking display (17 kill blocks) that came to the fore in the last two sets, the Asian giants kept their invincibility: 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19,15-9). Zhu Ting was followed by Yuan Xinyue as both finished the match with 26 points. The latter staged strong blocking performance (7 kill blocks!). Gabriela Guimarães “Gabi” top-scored for Brazil with 20 points, while Ana Beatriz Corrêa “Bia” made 4 kill blocks.
The USA is the other team, along with China, that has not suffered a single defeat, so far. But just like China, the team coached by Karch Kiraly narrowly avoided the first failure at the World Cup. Japan imposed themselves as worthy opponents, coming back twice in the match (from 0-1 and 1-2 in sets). There is another similarity with the U.S. team compared to China. The North American side also made 17 kill blocks today, making rival powerless in the match when it counted the most. Chiaka Ogbogu repeated Xinyue’s display of 7 kill blocks! Michelle Bartsch-Hackley poured in 30 points for the winning team. As for Japan, teenager Mayu Ishikawa scored 23 points.
Apart from China vs. Brazil encounter, another big derby of the world volleyball marked Day 6. Russia downed weakened team of Serbia, who came to the World Cup after an exhausting CEV EuroVolley campaign, which they finished on the throne, and positioned themselves just behind the unbeaten duo China – the USA in the charts. Driven by Nataliya Goncharova (21 points) and Irina Koroleva (4 kill blocks), Russia won by a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16). Serbia missed a huge opportunity to take the lead in sets of 2-1 as the squandered six-point advantage (13-7). Bianka Buša top-scored for the Balkan nation with 19 points.
