XI’AN: Hosts China clinched their first triumph in the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifiers with an assertive straight-set victory. Star player Zhang Jingyin once again shone for China. In other Pool C showdowns, Belgium managed a surprise victory over the Netherlands in three sets, while Canada almost achieved an upset against top-ranked Poland.
Earlier in the day, despite Bulgaria’s vigorous attempt, Argentina sealed their win in straight sets, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 31-29). Bulgaria’s captain Tsvetan Sokolov showcased an impressive performance with 20 points, but Argentina’s Bruno Lima was not far behind with 16 points.
Meanwhile, Belgium outdid themselves with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-15) win against the Netherlands. Belgium’s outside hitter and captain, Sam Deroo, stood out with a striking 21 points.
The most gripping match of the day was between Canada and Poland. The Canadian team pushed Poland to their limits, taking the game into the fifth set’s overtime. However, Poland emerged victorious with a score of 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 17-15). Poland’s Bartosz Bednorz was the top scorer with 25 points.
In the final match, China registered a commanding 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-19) win over Mexico. With this, China advanced to sixth place in the current pool standings. Zhang Jingyin continued to shine, scoring the match high of 16 points for China, while Josue Lopez was Mexico’s top scorer with 10 points.
