Serbia achieved a remarkable victory against Cuba on Wednesday in the third week of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 Preliminary Phase, securing their place in the qualification zone for the Paris Olympics just days before the deadline.
Serbia triumphed over Cuba with a 3-2 scoreline, overcoming an early deficit and boosting their FIVB ranking points by 4.95, now leading Cuba by 10 points. Both teams have three matches remaining in Ljubljana, with Serbia facing Turkey, while Cuba takes on Bulgaria.
The match saw a fluctuating performance from Serbia, who struggled initially, losing the first two sets 22-25 and 21-25. However, they rallied in the third set, winning 25-16, and continued their momentum with a 25-20 win in the fourth. The decisive fifth set ended 15-12 in Serbia’s favor, with Dražen Luburić leading the team with 21 points.
This victory not only keeps Serbia’s Olympic hopes alive but also strengthens their standing for the final tournament of the Volleyball Nations League.
In other matches, Poland defeated Italy 3-0, and in Manila, the USA lost to Iran 3-2, while Germany beat France 3-1, impacting the race for the final tournament spots.
