Slovenia’s women’s volleyball team celebrated a landmark moment, earning their first-ever victory at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Argentina in Thailand.

The debutants were dominant from start to finish, outscoring their South American rivals in spikes, serves, and blocks. Young outside hitter Fatoumatta Sillah led the charge with a stellar 22 points, while Eva Zatkovic and captain Sasa Planinsec also hit double figures to seal the breakthrough win.
With the result, Slovenia climbed to second place in Pool D (1-2 record, 4 points), edging past Argentina (1-2, 3 points). Their fate, however, now depends on the final group match between the USA and Czechia. A victory for table-toppers USA would secure Slovenia’s spot in the knockout stage, while a Czechia win would end their campaign.
“It’s unbelievable. We worked so hard, and today we proved we belong here,” Sillah said after the match. Head coach Alessandro Orefice called it the most important win in the team’s history, expressing pride in his players’ resilience and determination.
Argentina’s Bianca Cugno top-scored for her side with 16 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Slovenia from celebrating a fairytale debut victory.
Now, Slovenia waits anxiously for the USA–Czechia showdown — a result that could carry them to Bangkok and the round of 16.
