Cuban National Team is always aiming a medal in the tournaments of youth categories, but Russia were unstoppable in Pool B match of 2017 FIVB U21 World Championship held in Brno 3-0 (32-30, 25-17, 25-14). Gazprom-Yugra Surgut receiver Anton Semyshev pushed „Zbornaya“ towards win with 19 points. A receiver Osniel Melgarejo, who finished last season in Greek Panathinaikos Athens and who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, topped Cuba along with opposite Miguel Gutiérrez, both scoring 11 points.

Iran downed Italy, surprsingly easy, in the biggest derby of the opening day. In Pool C in České Budějovice, Asian side won in straight sets, partially 25-22, 25-19, 25-21. Kalleh Mazandaran opposite Rasoul Aghchehli led Iran with 11 points, while opposite of Azimut Modena youth team, Giulio Pinali, had 12 on the other side.

Turkey shocked United States with a clear win 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 30-28) in Pool B in their just third appearance in the tournament. Galatasaray İstanbul receiver Adis Lagumdžija collected 16 for the European side. Nineteen points of the Long Beach State University opposite Kyle Ensing were not enough for the Americans to take, at least, one set.

Argentina, Poland, China, Canada and Brazil also achieved premiere wins in the tournament.
