France advanced to the semi-finals of the Final Six at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League by beating title holders Serbia in the last round of Pool K despite they needed to win only two sets.
„We watched the Serbia vs. USA match, yesterday, and we saw a very good Serbian team, so we were aware that qualifying will be a difficult task. We started very well, on serving, blocking and especially on defence, but with the 2-0 the energy went down. Maybe they were exhausted, so we tried to win with other players and they did OK, but not enough to win. That’s why the main line-up came back in the fifth set, because we wanted the best possible place on the pool for the semifinals,” Laurent Tillie, head coach of the „Team Yavbou“ said.
„I mostly regret because I didn’t see my team playing on the level we’re used to and on which I want us to play and not so much regarding the fugures but emotionally. We simply must understand that we’re the team that must play with 100% of its abilities or else it becomes a mediocre team. And whenever we don’t have the necessary energy on the court, whenever we don’t have that essesntial emotion to support each, to shout, get it all out, players go in their own corners, don’t talk to each other, keep their mouth shut and wait what will happen. I’m not saying it was so bad tonight, but it was visible the things weren’t going the way we’re used to and that we have a lot of problems to deal with. It all reflected a lot on our play,“ Serbian NT head coach Nikola Grbić has spoken bluntly.
